Derrick Doesn’t Cook: Hobo Pies

Chief photojournalist, Derrick Larr, and his family were on vacation last weekend. And, while they were getting some well-deserved family time, Derrick put them all to work for this special 2-part episode of Derrick Doesn’t Cook.

This time the whole family is participating in a camping cookout. From the main course to the dessert, check out their take on the classic hobo pie.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Spray Butter or Oil
  • White Bread Loaf

Clarabelle’s Chili Hobo Pie

  • Canned No Bean Chili
  • Colby Jack Cheese, Shredded
  • Fritos

Austin’s Pizza Hobo Pie

  • Jarred Pizza Sauce
  • Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded
  • Cooked Pepperoni
  • Canned Sliced Black Olives

Shannon’s Reuben Hobo Pie

  • Corned Beef
  • Jarred Sauerkraut
  • Thousand Island Dressing
  • Swiss, Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded

Connor’s Blueberry Cheesecake Hobo Pie

  • Canned Blueberry Pie Filling
  • Whipped Cream Cheese
  • Mozzarella

Place a slice of buttered bread on the inside of the pie iron. Take one of the slices of bread and add your favorite ingredients. Do not put anything on the other slice. Use cheese to your advantage – it helps keep the bread slices together. Close and lock the pie iron parts together. Cook over a hot campfire, turning occasionally – until the pie is hot and golden brown, about 4 minutes.

If you’re using a true cast-iron hobo pie maker, make sure to ‘re-season’ it. for more information.
