What’s Growing With Tom: Flower Bed and Fruit Tree Update

We haven’t checked out the flower bed much this year so here’s the latest.

In the Spring, Terry from Barker Creek Nursery planted a perennial, pollinator garden for us. So, instead of a ton of bright color and lots of dead-heading, it’s been a sit back and relax this summer. The pollinators have been around! I’ve seen several kinds of bees and butterflies! Glad to see the natural way is working.

The bad news is the Japanese beetles have been an issue again this year. That’s why we have the bags around the garden and are getting rid of them, the natural way.

The leaves are not in the best shape but we can tell it’s getting ready to bloom, but what can we do to make sure it’s going to pop?

Justin Morgan, from Morgan Composting, says their Bloom Blaster is the way to go. It’s a 4-18-4, and that will have Kelp in there and then we make the humic and fulvic acid to go on there, so it’s a natural way.  He says a simple spray in a figure-eight motion is what works. You don’t want to soak it.

He also recommends using Healthy Garden in the soil. It will help the plants through any dry spells and keep food going to the roots.

Since the flower bed was such an easy check-up, we want to see how our fruit trees are doing.

Unfortunately, the beetles have had their way with the top leaves. The bags we put out have helped but the damage was already done.

To help the tree, we are putting down Tree and Shrub Doo. Justin says this is more like a compost with bark, gypsum, Tennessee brown rock, and phosphorus in there.

We are staying organic here at 9&10 so it takes a little longer to overcome some issues because we’re not spraying chemicals.

Regardless, weeds happen, bugs happen… We deal with it and move on.
