Police responded to a shooting at an apartment building on 3 Mile Road at about 8 p.m. Monday night. Police say the man went door to door and broke into two other apartments, before finding exactly where the 40-year-old woman was living.

She was hiding in a bedroom, but investigators say the 73-year-old man fired three shots at her door in an effort to get inside. Officers arrived before the man was able to make his way in. Traverse City Police Capt. James Bussell says, “He had indicated that he heard the sirens from our vehicles and that’s why he had thrown the weapon into his truck. But if he had more time, we don’t know what would’ve happened.

The suspect was taken into custody on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, and home invasion. His name hasn’t been released pending his arraignment. A motive wasn’t clear and police are still investigating. Residents in the two other apartment units were also not injured.
