Taliban Seizes Ghazni, Their 10th Afghan Provincial Capital

AfghanOn Thursday the Taliban captured a provincial capital near Kabul, Afghanistan just weeks before the end of the American troop withdrawal.

Ghazni has been the 10th provincial capital the Taliban have taken in the last week.

By seizing Ghanzi the Taliban has cut off a highway that is crucial for linking the Afghan capital with the country’s southern provinces.

The latest U.S. military intelligence assessment suggests Kabul could come under insurgent pressure within 30 days and that, if current trends hold, the Taliban could gain full control of the country within a few months.

According to the Associated Press, the Taliban has a hold on two-thirds of the nation, and thousands of people have fled their homes.

The U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan issued a second security alert on August 12 urging all U.S. citizen to leave Afghanistan immediately.

The embassy also reports the Travel Advisory for Afghanistan remains at Level 4 – Do Not Travel, due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed conflict, and Covid-19.
