The Board of Trustees at Northwestern Michigan College is giving a special nod to the school’s former leader. Board Vice-Chair Rachel Johnson says, “Last night something really exciting happened at the NMC Board Meeting. Our board voted unanimously to rename the West Hall Innovation Center.”

Johnson is referring to Monday night’s meeting, where the NMC Board voted night to re-name the brand new West Hall Innovation Center. It will now be called the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center. It’s a tribute to NMC’s last President: the Trustees give Nelson credit for the vision of the $14 (M) million dollar renovation at West Hall.

Johnson says, “Everyone had so many good things to say about Tim, and the long-lasting impact he’s going to have on our college and our students. From starting the Freshwater Studies program to leading us to be second in the nation for veterans’ services, to having global programs. There’s so many things Tim has done that have made such an impact on our community and NMC. This was just a great way of recognizing and honoring that.”

Tim Nelson is the longest-serving President ever at NMC. He retired in 2019 after serving the college for 18 years. Johnson also credits Board President Chris Bott with the idea of naming the building in Nelson’s honor.
