The MI Shot to Win Sweepstakes announced the newest winners from July 7-17 on Tuesday afternoon.

One of the lucky winners was the first from northern Michigan.

“I straight up asked him like five times, I was like is this real? Is this real?” said winner Johnathon William Barraw.

It’s not every day you win $50,000 just from getting the Covid-19 vaccine, but Barraw, a Traverse City native, knows just what that feeling is like.

“I’ve never won anything like this before,” said Barraw. “I’ve never won anything, not even a teddy bear, so it kind of caught me off guard a little bit.”

Barraw got the shot with his fiancée on July 8 at the Meijer in Traverse City.

“I actually did not know anything about it until I went in there and they gave me my shot,” said Barraw. “My fiancée’s the one who entered us into it.”

He said he had two reasons to get the vaccine-his kids and his health.

“I’ve been having a lot of health complications with my lungs lately and I used to work at a really hot kitchen with a bunch of fryers,” he said. “Wearing that mask every day, it did not help at all.”

He couldn’t believe it when he got the call that he won three days after his shot.

“My wife was ecstatic,” he said. “She was having a bad day at work and I called her, I’m like, ‘Babe,’ she was like, ‘What?’ I said, ‘We won,’ she said, ‘What do you mean we won?’ I was like, ‘We won the sweepstakes!’”

Barraw hopes to purchase a house and throw a nice wedding reception when he gets married next month.

“It kind of brought the light back into my life a little bit because we’ve been kind of falling into the darkness a little bit,” he said. “It’s just overall a really good thing and I’m excited to see what happens next.”
