PFAS Site Identified In Elk Rapids, Likely No Impact To Residents

A newly listed PFAS site has been found in Elk Rapids.

It was listed by the Michigan PFAS Action Response team on July 16 for the Key II Industrial Building on the 600 block of Bridge Street.

The site in Elk Rapids has been listed as Tier 3, which means it likely won’t impact residents. This is because most of the village of Elk Rapids is served by a municipal water system. Groundwater also flows east of the site, away from any shallow wells that may be in the village.

“We’ve checked local, residential well records and there’s no wells down gradient of this site that would be affected. At this point there’s no remediation or active investigation on this site,” said Christiaan Bon, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy site lead. “This came to us as part of a routine property transaction.”

While no action is currently being taken at the spot EGLE says they expect to find more PFAS sites in Michigan and are ensuring no further contamination occurs.
