Ferris State University Students Place First in U.S. Dept. of Energy Design Competition

Four students in Ferris State University’s Architecture and Sustainability program won first place in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2021 Solar Decathlon competition.

Fsu HouseThe goal of the competition is to design a home to meet both cost efficient and energy efficient standards.

The team designed a single family suburban home along the Muskegon River featuring a greenhouse, solar panels, and energy efficient appliances.

They said they did not expect to win first place at all.

“We were just wanting to do the best that we could,” said senior Jacob Hudson. “As the competition progressed, we kind of heard rumors that there was a good chance that we might win this.”

Four other teams from FSU participated in the competition, and the school won the “Impressive First Time Team” award.
