The St. Ignace Fire Department Shows Off Their New Fire Hall

“It’s a big responsibility and we take it very seriously.”

A small town volunteer department opened their doors today to show off their new building.

The St. Ignace Fire Department officially moved into their much bigger facility in February, but on Saturday, the public was welcomed to take a tour.

The dream and need for the new fire hall started 20 years ago, but things didn’t get started until a recent millage passed a few years ago.

The previous fire hall was too small to house all the equipment and vehicles.

There are just over two dozen volunteer firefighters at the department.

They have over 200 square miles of responsibility, plus the Mackinac Bridge.

“We could not ask for more support. We continue to get support. We had several donations from the citizens to equip the hall. We could not ask for a better community to live in. I’m very proud of it. I love this town,” said Gary Sorenson, who retired during today’s open house after seven years as chief.

He plans to spend his days fishing.
