Northern Michigan Canoe Rentals Ready for Busy Holiday Weekend
This weekend is expected to be a busy one for canoe rentals across northern Michigan.
Horina Canoe and Kayak Rental in Wellston says the summer season is off to a strong start and they expect another busy weekend with the Fourth of July holiday.
“It’s actually looking pretty good. We’re about filled with kayaks, we’ve got canoes left for Saturday and just the opposite for Sunday, we’ve got kayaks left but a lot more canoes going out Sunday, but the weather looks to be very cooperative” said owner James Horina.
Just down the road, Sportsman’s Port owner Tom Willard hopes the weekend helps jump-start their season.
“The weekend is busy, we’ve got a lot of campers a lot of canoes, rafts and kayaks going out and we still have availability of everything. I think with the weather being nice, we’re going to get a lot of walk-ins and a lot of unexpected people we didn’t have last year,” said Willard.
Horina says the strong interest in paddle sport rentals likely stems from the pandemic.
“I think with COVID last year, people rediscovered that they can do stuff outside and so last year was a very busy year even with COVID and the weather was awesome last year too,” said Horina.
A trend that’s showing no sign of slowing down.
“It’s exciting, we’ve been waiting, it’s been a lot of rain, a lot of bad weather so we’re really looking forward to some heat and getting some people outside,” said Willard.
“The trends been everything has been last minute, people do call but it’s like 2 or 3 days prior to the weekend,” said Horina.
