Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department Debuts New Ladder Truck

A high-tech piece of firefighting equipment is now in the hands of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department.

A new 100-foot ladder fire truck was delivered last week. Since then, firefighters have been training on it.

The new truck replaces the 30-year-old, 75-foot ladder truck. The controls are checked by computer to limit human error

The total cost was $1.4 million. All firefighters must be trained on the truck before it can be put to use.

“It makes the truck more useable if everybody is trained on it,” Sault Ste. Marie Fire Chief Scott LaBonte said. “That way we are not saying we can’t call this person or that person to work on it….anybody that is here can drive the truck or operate the truck. And that frees up a lot of people.”

The fire truck will be in the Fourth of July parade in Sault Ste. Marie Sunday. LaBonte said it should officially be put into service by the end of next week.
