Traverse City Preparing for Weekend of Heavy Traffic

If you’re heading to Traverse City for this Fourth of July weekend, get ready to deal with a lot of crowds and traffic.

The holiday weekend combined with the start of the national cherry festival and now a presidential visit, could make getting around difficult.

The start of the National Cherry Festival once again coincides with the Fourth of July holiday, something that’s likely to draw even more visitors to the downtown area and the open space.

“We know that parking is limited, and we know there’s a lot of people in town and excited to enjoy the festivities, and we want everyone to do it safely so look where you are going, make sure you plan parking options early,” said Kat Paye, Executive Director of the Nation

Drivers in Traverse City will also have to contend with a presidential visit this weekend. President Joe Biden scheduled to fly in on Saturday, the exact details of that trip have not been released yet but wherever that motorcade goes, you can expect traffic delays

“I don’t know how big of a span this is going to be, I don’t know how much of a draw, I don’t have an preliminary figures, but I’m going to assume there’s going to be a rather large entourage of people that will be here,” said Traverse City Police Chief Jeff O’Brien.

And on top of all of that, there is still plenty of road construction throughout Grand Traverse County. MDOT says they’ll be pausing work on a project on M-37, but it could still take drivers longer than normal to make their way through.

“On our M-37 project, while we do have one lane open in each direction during the holiday weekend, it is going to involve some traffic shifts because we’re building two roundabouts, we’re widening the highway in sections and it won’t be the typical traffic pattern that everyone is used to,” said MDOT North Region Communications Representative James Lake.

Bottom line: plan on extra time to get wherever you’re going.
