U.P. High Speed Chase Leaves One Dead, Another in Life Threatening Condition
On Thursday night police responded to multiple calls of a reckless driver coming from Pickford and heading north to Sault Ste. Marie.
A press release sent out by the Chippewa County Sheriffs department stated the truck was swerving in and out of lanes, hitting multiple vehicles and taking out several mailboxes. He also threw a tire iron at another driver.
The chase exceeded speeds of 100 miles per hour came to an end in Sault Ste. Marie outside Great Lakes Recovery where the driver slammed into the back of an occupied vehicle. The occupant was ejected and later pronounced dead on the scene.
Nearby resident Jasper Thompson arrived home just minutes before the crash. “Heard a big crash. Sounded like a plane crash,” he said. “I was like ‘What was going on?’ Took a look outside and a big dust cloud was coming from the road and I’m like ‘that’s not good’.
The driver of the truck was taken to War Memorial Hospital in life threatening condition. The Chippewa County Sheriffs Department is asking anyone who might have more information on the incident to call or reach out to their Facebook page.
