A barn fire in Leelanau County brought in four fire departments to the scene Wednesday morning.

A call from Maple City brought crews to Oleson Farms on West Ryant Road around 11 am. Crews from Cedar, Glen Lake, Leland and Almira were all called to battle the fire.

One of the barns was fully engulfed, and when firefighters arrived, a farmer was trying to evacuate his herd of cattle.

Cedar Fire was the command agency on the scene, but the Glen Lake Fire Chief was able to tell us that s a 30-foot-tall barn structure was destroyed, and at least one corn silo was also damaged. But he says there were no injuries and the animals were able to make it to safety with some help. “When the first crews got here the cattle were actually all in the driveway right here behind me,” said Glen Lake Fire Chief Bryan Ferguson. “They were able to get them off to the side and in a fenced in area. So they got all of the animals out.”

A fire crew was also on standby, downwind, as a precaution – in case that fire spread to a nearby field.

The Chief says it looks like the fire started on bales of hay in the barn, but there’s no word yet on the cause of the fire.
