The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation has awarded scholarships to high school seniors.

The organization was able to award almost $260,000 to students in Antrim, Leelanau, Benzie, Kalkaska and Grand Traverse Counties.

The Community Foundation says this year they have out 168 scholarships.

Programs and Grants Manager, Gina Thornbury, says this year they were able to award a few more students than they have in previous years.

The Community Foundation says their biggest goal is to not only support student wishing to attend college, but to also support those wishing to go onto trade school.

“So some of them are really based on financial need, others are based on things like academic performance or community involvement,” said Thornbury. “So it just depends on the scholarship but there is really an opportunity for everybody out there.”

The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation says their next openings for scholarship applications will be in January.
