Colonial Pipeline CEO Says Payment to Hackers Was Toughest Decision of His Career

The CEO of Colonial Pipeline, Joseph Blount, testified in front of a Senate committee about the ransomware attack that forced a temporary shutdown of one the country’s largest fuel pipelines.

Blount says the Russian hackers, a group known as Darkside, exploited a virtual private network that wasn’t supposed to be in use.

He says paying ransom to get back control of the company’s computer system was the hardest decision he’s ever had to make in his career, but he believes it was necessary to get the pipeline back up and running.

The FBI was able to recover about $2.3 million worth of bitcoin that was paid to the hackers.

Blount will testify in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
