STEM Learning for ‘Growing’ Young Minds, Lincoln Elementary School in The Soo
As the school year wraps up for many students, projects are coming to an end as well. For one Sault Ste Marie elementary school, their project is allowing students to take home some of their efforts…but also helping out the community. Lincoln Elementary had a greenhouse built last school year, but because of COVID-19, it was not used.
This year, though, it has seen its fair share of use. Students got their hands dirty earlier this year by filling hundreds of pots with dirt and planting seeds. This week, they trimmed the plants.
Each student got to take home a flowering plant and tomato plant. All others are being sold to whoever wants to stop by and buy some. This is a true learning experience for the students.
“They’re (students) like, I don’t know that my parents know how to do this,” said teacher, Autumn Barr. “Well, now you can teach them! Just be able to say…Hey, I can grow my own food. It’s not, just…I don’t have to go to the grocery store to buy my vegetables….I can just plant it”.
Any money raised will be put back into the greenhouse project.
