With the busy travel season going into full swing, driver safety is what is on the mind of the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
The annual Click it or Ticket campaign kicked off Monday, and runs through June 6.
This means more patrol cars will be out conducting traffic stops.
Lt. Brian Giddis tells 9&10 News that the campaign is meant to bring awareness to the importance of seatbelts, not just to pull more people over.
“The aim is not to just go out and write tickets,” said Lt. Giddis. “It’s to raise awareness for people to take that extra second before they put it in drive to go ahead and fasten the seatbelt, make (sure) their passengers are buckled up, particularly children.”
According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 51% of men and 40% of women killed in car accidents in 2019 were unrestrained.
