Sault Ste Marie Water Department Conducts Sewer Smoke Test

Smoke emitting from Sault Ste Marie businesses today was actually a good thing according to city officials.

Crews from the Water Department dropped smoke “bombs” into manholes to see if smoke came out of each building’s soil stack.

If the smoke was seen, that part of the underground system is working. If not, an investigation would need to be done to prevent serious damage from occurring.

“It’s important to do it so we can find problems and fix problems before they become major problems,” said City Water Director Kirk Tews. “Separated pipes can lead to sink holes in road and also sink holes in yards. We don’t like those things so we try to eliminate them when we can.”

Crews tested about one mile of sewer lines. The city has about 100 miles of lines in total.
