The Midland County Sheriff’s Office says a plane crashed in the early afternoon Monday.

Deputies say the plane crashed in the area of South Geneva Road and West Ball Road in Jasper Township.

Deputies say the crash was called in by a passerby that observed the plane on fire in a field.

St. Louis Fire Department responded to the fire, and extinguished the flames.

Deputies say the 23-year-old pilot was found in the cockpit of the plane. He was the only occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say the plane was a single-engine Cessna 182H model, and the cause of the crash is unknown.

The investigation is being turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.
