Mesick Drivers Frustrated by Road Closure As Lengthy Detour Goes into Effect

Some major bridge work by MDOT along M-115 in Wexford County started this week, bringing a lengthy detour with it.

That has people in Mesick looking for to avoid the inconvenience.

This is the detour MDOT mapped out while they work on the M-115 bridge: it takes drivers down M-37, to 4 Rd, and then along 9 Rd, back onto M-115.

“That’s the detour route we’ve used for a couple of other projects over the past couple of years, this is a route we’ve determined in cooperation with the Wexford County Road Commission and that’s really how all of our detour routes are determined,” said James Lake, MDOT North Region Communications Representative.

And locals thought they had a way around that detour, using county back roads, like North 11 Rd, until signs popped up closing it to thru traffic, frustrating drivers like David Stanley.

MDOT says those signs were put in place to keep people from going down those roads, not meant for heavy traffic.

“If I’ve got to make all that extra work, I’m going to go to Traverse City to go shopping instead of coming back here into Mesick to go shopping, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels that way,” said Stanley.

Jody Zemsta owns Misty Hills Greenhouse on North 11 Rd. She says people can still get to her business, but other drivers are taking it way too fast.

“They didn’t do anything to 14 road or the sanctuary, they didn’t put any brine down, and they did nothing. The road is just so bumpy right now that it jerks you around so you have to slow down,” said Zemsta.

Work is expected to be complete in the fall.
