Enbridge Continues Line 5 Operations as Deadline Nears

The debate over Line 5 and its danger and use in the Straits of Mackinac has hit a major deadline as Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the line must be shut down Wednesday.

It was 180 days ago when Gov. Whitmer told Enbridge they must cease operations of Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac.

Today Gov. Whitmer would be rescinding the easement that Enbridge is using and borrowing from the state of Michigan and that it will be trespassing on state land if they continue operations.

Enbridge has fired back with a lawsuit with help from the Canadian government and chambers of commerce saying the state does not have the power to do this and it is a federal government issue.

Today is the day Governor Whitmer has ordered Line 5 to cease operations.

Advocates for the Upper Peninsula and legislators say that taking away the operations of Line 5 for the next 2 to 3 years until the utility tunnel can be built will be devastating to the Upper Peninsula in northern Michigan in propane prices, gas prices, jet fuel for surrounding airports that rely on the utilities that come through that line.
