Treetops Resort received a donation this week to help continue their Military Golf League.

Each week, active duty or veteran military members and their spouses come to golf and socialize.

The Gaylord Elks Lodge donated $5,000 to the program. The Elks organization was originally founded after the Civil War to support those veterans, and have supported military members ever since.

Some members of the Gaylord area club are also veterans in the golf league. They say they see firsthand the power this golf league has bringing current and former military members together.

“The Military Golf League is just fantastic,” said Gaylord area Elk and Military Golf League member Dennis White. “We get to know other military people and you can see some of these younger kids coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they definitely have a problem and it’s good to be able to sit down and talk with them and get to know them.”

“Veterans will talk about things with other veterans that we won’t talk about with anyone else,” said fellow Gaylord area Elk and Military Golf League member James Steward. “Part of us feel if you weren’t there you couldn’t understand, that’s not true but that’s what we feel deep down.”

“I always say even without these donations I would figure out a way to make this work but the donations from these service organizations just help so much,” said Treetops Resort’s Kevin McKinley.
