Whitmer: ‘We have to Be on The Same Team’ With Vaccines

Governor Gretchen Whitmer made several stops in Northern Michigan Thursday, overseeing a road project in Clare, a bill signing in Traverse City and then toured a vaccination site in Petoskey.

With the new ‘MI Vacc to Normal’ plan, restrictions across the state are lifted as the vaccination rate increases.

So far, more than half of the state’s eligible Michiganders have gotten at least one shot but that pace is slowing. As the vaccination rate slows, the return to normal seems further away.

“I think our modeling always told us, at some point we are going to see our supply eclipse demand,” Governor Whitmer said, “That’s what’s happening.”

With each shot in each arm, Michigan gets closer to full re-engagement. As the 70% vaccination goal gets closer, fewer people are lining up for their shot.

“There are a lot of people out there who are open to it but still have some questions,” said Whitmer, “We have to make sure they get answered.”

Northern Michigan is ahead of the rest of the state in vaccination rate but unlike last summer, when certain regions could re-open faster with better performance, that’s not the case this time. The whole state moves along together.

“We all have to be on the same team here to encourage people to avail themselves of these vaccines,” said Whitmer.

Another reason to keep demand up? The feds are now going to allocate vaccines to the states that need them the most.

“It’s a good problem to have, that we have vaccines right? And plenty of vaccines,” said Whitmer, “Our big challenge is getting people to turn out and get vaccinated. We want to make sure that we draw down as much as necessary to meet our demand and we’re going to continue to do that.”
