It’s been nearly 40 years since one local school had a true agri-science program, and it’s hoping more youth get involved in agriculture. The average age of a farmer is around 60 years old and if the younger generation doesn’t step up, who will?

Students at Rudyard High School in Chippewa County are getting out of the classroom and getting their hands dirty, literally, in agri-science. Sure, there are the textbooks to read, but nothing like hands-on experience of growing the vegetable plants, building the garden beds, and watching everything grow.

Granted, they have not been able to plant anything yet because of the cold temperatures, but once they do, a couple hundred plants will provide an abundance of food. This summer, the school plans on building an actual greenhouse. All veggies grown and harvested will be donated.
