Man Arrested For Assaulting Members of the Media In Leelanau County

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been arrested after assaulting two members of the media.

Deputies were responding to reports of a man causing a disturbance at Discovery Pier in Elmwood Township Thursday during a visit from Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

As deputies monitored the 39-year-old Traverse City man, they say he got into a heated verbal disagreement with another person.

Their conversation was overheard by members of the media, who then went to observe.

Deputies say that shortly after the media arrived, the Traverse City man assaulted one member by forcefully grabbing a microphone out of her hand and throwing it.

And as deputies were taking the man into custody, he spit on another member of the media.

The Traverse City man now faces two counts of assault and battery and one county of malicious destruction of property.
