10 Digit Dialing Soon Required For All Calls Starting Oct. 24th

In preparation for the roll out of the new 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, making phone calls will be a bit different for people with 616, 810,906, and 989 area codes.

Starting Oct. 24, you’ll need to include area codes with any phone number to make a call.

The City of Mt. Pleasant wants people to remember to reprogram devices such as life lines and security alarms to make calls with the ten digit number instead of a seven digit number.

“We don’t realize how many things we already have pre-programmed,” said Darcy Orlik, Director of Public Relations for the City of Mt. Pleasant. “Alarm systems, internet dial up numbers and life safety systems or medical monitoring devices. All of those need to be checked from now until October 24th.”

The new 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline begins on July 16th. Until then, individuals must still call 1-800-273-TALK to reach the lifeline.
