North Central Michigan College and Walloon Lake Association Partner for Conservation

North Central Michigan College is joining forces with the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy to monitor the local environment.

The two will pool their resources to create community interest and bring in students who will learn and help with local conservation efforts. There are 50 nature preserves that need to be looked after and it’s an opportunity for students to get first hand experience. Together, they’ll monitor water quality and maintain local watersheds.

Executive Director of the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy, Josephine Roberts said they’ll also work to combat the threat of invasive species in the area.  “Identification skills training for the students and really for us it’s like boots on the grounds that helps us do invasive species surveys right in our preserves,” she said.

The two organizations will make their partnership official at a signing ceremony at the college tomorrow.
