It’s the time of year to celebrate graduates.

Many students over the last year missed out on a traditional commencement ceremony.

Now, some schools are trying to make up for it.

Melody Hovie is a nursing student at Northwestern Michigan College.

She says even though this is her third- degree, she has never had to work harder.

Hovie says, “It feels like a big accomplishment. Nursing school is really hard, really strenuous but it’s been great to have all my supporters there with me and then two of them today to watch me walk”

She says for herself and many of her classmates, COVID challenged their skills.

“Its been really hard to learn how to manipulate your practice online and then enter into the hospital setting just the last semester and try and compile all of your practice all at one time,” said Hovie.

During Saturday’s commencement they honor the graduates from the class of 2021 and also those that didn’t get the chance to walk in 2020.

Families were able to rotate through the Milliken auditorium to watch as their grad walked the stage.

School President, Nick Nissley says, “Any year graduation is a big event for students but this year it’s an extra special event because these students persisted through almost 15 months of some of the most trying times of their lives.”

He says he will forever remember these graduating classes.

“I couldn’t be prouder. The grit, the resilience, the determination, the stick-with-it-ness that they have I think is going to be unlike any other generation of students that we’ve seen,” said Nissley.

In total, NMC was able to honor 111 graduates in their commencement.
