MI Secretary of State Sues for Public Opinion On New Voting Districts
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson filed a lawsuit to make sure the public has input on new voting districts in Michigan.
45 days of public comment are required for the new district maps.
The independent commission in charge of redistricting is supposed to make the maps available on Sept. 17.
Because the pandemic delayed U.S. census data, those maps won’t be available until after that date.
Benson is suing to move the start date for public comment to Dec. 11.
If the suit goes through, final district maps would be approved on Jan. 25, 2022.
