GTPulse: Tusen Takk Foundation Accepting Applications for Artist Residency
Is there a talented artist in your world that’s in need of some dedicated time to focus on their craft? Despite our everyday lives being much quieter over the past year, the distraction of home life, social media, and other deterrents aren’t favorable conditions for getting into a good flow of work.
Artist residencies can be found all over the world. Some of them are programs that offer a group experience where they work with peers and seasoned artists, others give the artist more freedom to self-direct themselves and zero in on a project.
Artist-in-residence programs are centuries old, with one of the known firsts being held at Villa Medici at Careggi in Tuscany in the 1400s. You don’t need to go to Italy to find beauty, seclusion, and inspiration for a perfect artist residency, though. We have wonderful offerings right here in Northern Michigan.
Among them is one of my favorites, Tusen Takk. The name, which means “thousand thanks” in Norweigian, is a fitting title for the residence founded by Geoffrey Peckham. The residence and program are an ode to the meaningful work artists produce, and the beauty of God’s green Earth in Leelanau County.
Tusen Takk is now accepting applications for residencies that will take place from June 2022 – December 2023.
Tusen Takk welcomes applications from both emerging and established visual artists in photography, printmaking, sculpting, painting, as well as creative writers and composers. Residencies encourage artists to explore new ideas or expand current work. They look for ideas that will affirm and enrich the human spirit, giving form to chaos and perception to beauty.
The single most important qualification for artists invited to Tusen Takk is that they have created a body of work that exemplifies excellence and has, or has the potential to significantly contribute to their artistic field. Artists should be self-motivated to be productive in the isolation afforded by a residency and should be comfortable talking about or sharing their work with audiences.
Tusen Takk was designed to host one resident, or two in collaboration, for residencies between three and eight weeks. Artists-in-residence are provided housing with 24/7 access to the studios, an honorarium to help offset expenses, and the Director’s Collection and Library can be made available to the resident as a resource for learning and inspiration.
Time away from usual surroundings is a great help to working artists. The artist residence has an abundance of windows that let light and nature stream in, and who wouldn’t fall in love with the surrounding woods and water of Leland? Encourage the artist you know to apply on their website here. Applications are due by July 15th. To stay updated on who their current artist in residence is, and all other news about the nonprofit – follow them on Instagram and Facebook at Tusen Takk Foundation.
