Higher COVID cases could be rolling more restrictions back in place.

Now, youth indoor sports could be put on hold again.

On Wednesday, the CDC recommended states consider restricting these types of activities.

President of Grand Traverse Bay YMCA, Andy Page, says “Further restrictions and the potential need to restrict these types of activities even further could prove to be very difficult with a lot of young people.”

The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA has been allowing students to participate in indoor programs over the last few months, with extra precautions in place like facemasks and a heavy emphasis on social distancing.

Page says, “We’ve been able to survive and do the very best we can in providing a safe atmosphere for these youth sports.”

Now the CDC is recommending that states with increasing COVID cases limit that type of activity.

The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA says they’ll follow the restrictions, but say it could have a negative impact on the kids.

“So many of them have dealt with so much in this pandemic. The Y being able to provide these types of programs and activities for these young people is so important,” says Page.

Traverse City West High School athletics director, Jason Carmien, agrees.

Carmien says, “Morale is certainly a big thing. This has all hit groups differently but as far as high school sports go, kids are really struggling without their activities.“

Traverse City West High School says even though many of their sports will be happening outdoors, this still impacts the students that decide to play sports outside of school.

“Club sports are our feeder programs and when they have restrictions and can’t play it hurts everybody. We’re going to see this unfold over the next couple of years where we’re losing participation numbers,” says Carmien.

Traverse City West says they are taking the situation as it comes and will put more restrictions in place if needed.
