Soo Locks’ Early Opening for the 2021 Shipping Season

The Soo Locks officially opened Wednesday at one minute past noon to officially start the 2021 shipping season.

The tug-barge combo of the Laura L. Van Enkevort and Joseph H. Thompson was the first one in.

It arrived in Sault Ste Marie Tuesday morning along with another fleet mate.

Hundreds of people were there in Soo Locks Park to watch the vessel lock through.Locks Opening Sotvo 6 032400 00 17 05still001

Many drove several hours.

Larry Brown, From Hubbard Lake, says “This is the first time I have come up and naturally it has gotta rain, but at least it is not snowing!  When it said it opened at noon this year, I said we are going.  So here we are.  You cannot describe it.  I have always liked the big ships!”

Normally the locks would open a minute after midnight Wednesday, but the lack of ice and work on the Poe Lock getting done early allowed the early opening.
