U.S. Defense Secretary Makes Surprise Trip to Afghanistan
U.S. Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd says he’s concerned with the current level of violence in Afghanistan.
He made an unannounced trip to the country on Sunday.
The Trump administration had reached a deal with the Taliban to pull out by May 1.
Now the Biden administration is considering a six-month extension of troops in Afghanistan.
Lloyd says it’s a rigorous process to make decisions about removing troops and destroying equipment that could fall into the hands of the Taliban.
He would like to see disorder in Afghanistan under better control before more diplomatic talks move forward.
