George Floyd Murder Trial Begins Jury Selection

Jury selection for the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is expected to start Monday.

Chauvin is charged with the death of George Floyd.

Floyd was in police custody last May when he died after having Chauvin’s knee pressed on his neck for several minutes.

The incident ignited protests across the country against police killings of African Americans.

Chauvin is being charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, but a judge is considering adding a third-degree murder charge.

Experts say a third-degree charge is easier to prove, but could delay the trial. They also say it could take time to find jurors who are unbiased and not already familiar with the facts of the case.

Chauvin’s trial could last from now until May.
