In many spots like Houghton Lake, there is still a good amount of ice, but the date to remove all ice fishing shanties is quickly approaching.

For most counties in our area, March 15 is the deadline to have shanties off the ice.

While Gladwin, Midland, Isabella, Ogenaw, and Arenac Counties removal deadline was March 1.

“You never know what could happen that late in the ice with the warm weather coming and stuff I mean it’s better to go out there check them and get them prepped. Fish it until the end and then once it’s time pull them off nice and easy,” said Austin Walker, Fisherman.

Shanties that are removed daily can still be used after the deadline, but you should always use extreme caution when on the ice.
