Taste the Local Difference: February Four Food Finds
From beets being in season to a new brewery opening in northern Michigan and details to a no-cost marketing program for small food businesses, Tricia Phelps with Taste the Local Difference in Traverse City breaks it all down.
- What’s in season?
- Beets deserve the spotlight for their funky exterior and sweet flavor alone, but add to that their superfood level nutrition, versatility in the kitchen and hearty growing characteristics and it’s easy to see they’re truly incredible, underappreciated vegetable. Use beets for eating, for dying, for valentine’s day card making, but most of all use them in this cake
- No-cost marketing services for small farms and food businesses
- The Teams at NW Michigan Small Business Development Center and TLD are working together to offer no-cost marketing services to small farms and food businesses. A soft launch was rolled out in January and five new businesses are now working with SBDC and TLD on a variety of marketing needs from creating online stores, developing social media content, third-party marketing strategy and more. The funds are made possible by the CARES act funding awarded to the NW Michigan SBDC.

- Stonehound Brewing in Traverse City set to open
- This location on Bunker Hill on the east side of Traverse City was targeting an opening in April of last year, but then COVID hit. With closures and construction delays, their last hurdle is finally here and as soon as they pass final inspections they’ll open the doors. We learned that our friends at Radish Street Food, the popular vegan restaurant that started as a pop-up at the farmers market will also be supplying the food inside the walls at Stonehound.
- National CSA week starting February 21st to February 28th
- With the promotion of CSAs happening by the National CSA Innovation Network, local farms, and organizations. TLD is teaming up with MSUE and Michigan Food and Farming Systems to host a Virtual CSA Fair on Friday, the 26th. Stop in during the lunch hour between Noon-1 PM or Happy Hour from 5-6. Folks from all over the state are welcome to attend and we’ll be helping you match with your perfect CSA near you. Most of these matches will be targeted for the summer season, but if you’re also interested in a spring share our friends at the MI Farm Co-op are accepting new members until March 26th or they fill up on members. Whichever comes first!
