Bringing New Life to the Soo Theatre

Next month, the in downtown Sault Ste Marie will celebrate its 91st birthday. It’s a historic theater that has had its ups and downs over the decades. In recent years, it has hosted the soo film festival, numerous plays, and recitals along with concerts.

The building itself is showing its age. And, now there is a big push to get work on the exterior of the theatre.

Now, the former Downtown Development Authority director turned grant writer is helping the Soo Theatre project move forward in 2021.

“This is a massive undertaking of $650,000 to redo the entire exterior,” said Justin Knepper from . “It’s a 1930 construction that has had quite a bit of work done. So, my role will be to work with the theatre to identify key donors and reaching out to them to let them know how their funding will be used”.

“We have a plan to redo this whole building and put it to use,” explained the Soo Theatre project executive director, Colleen Arbic. “This is just the start of many phases to get the building the way we want it”. 

Knepper also added that “…it’s just time.  I think that is the big thing.  the theatre board decided it’s time to get it over the finish line and so that is the goal of 2021”.
