Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry Provides Support for Community

It’s about neighbors helping neighbors when it comes to being able to support our pets right now, whether that includes domestic animals like dogs and cats or birds and horses.  During the startPet Pantry Vo 4.transcoded.01 of the COVID-19 pandemic back in March, a group of animal lovers in Traverse City came together to create a non-profit complete with pet food, supplies and toys for people’s pets.  Their focus was on animals of all kinds.

The group realized countless people are facing job loss or financial difficulties, and it’s become tough for them to simply buy pet food or supplies.  That’s where the Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry was started at the Square Deal Country Store off Woodmere Avenue in Traverse City.

The organizers named the pantry in memory of their former co-worker, Kevin Hooper, a lifelong animal lover from Traverse City who passed away in March.  The pantry organizers want to spread the message that there’s no stigma or judgment attached and people in need of the pantry can take what items they need.

“One thing that I think people in this community do agree on is that we love our pets. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be worried about taking care of my pet and so we want to help those people. We don’t want them to get a permanent solution for a temporary problem,” says Robin Rosier an organizer with Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry.

Volunteers want people to realize they’re there on a mission to help those during this time and beyond the pandemic struggles.

“I would hate to see a family surrender their pet because they can’t afford to feed them or take care of them.  That’s where we come in. We’re hoping to lighten the load for them as well.  Anyone can reach out. There’s no documentation required to prove that you have a need.  You just come during our pantry hours and we will do what we can to help you,” says volunteer for Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry, Karen Dickey.

The pantry is open Wednesdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. outside the Square Deal Country Store in Traverse City at 900 Woodmere Avenue.
