Assault Suspect Arrested After Short Standoff in Mackinaw City

A man accused of assaulting a woman in a Mackinaw City hotel room is in custody after a short standoff with police.

It happened Thursday around 7:30 p.m. in Mackinaw City.

Mackinaw City police responded to a report that a woman had been assaulted at a hotel on S. Huron Ave. Police say the woman told them she had be strangled by a man, who was still in the hotel room.

Police say the man had barricaded himself in the hotel room with a knife and was threatening to harm himself.

After an hour of negotiating, police say they were able to get the man to put the knife down and leave the room.

Police say the man resisted arrest, and two officers sustained minor injuries taking him into custody.

According to the Mackinaw City Police Department, the man had warrants out in Michigan and out of state.

He is being held in the Cheboygan County Jail awaiting arraignment.
