Updated March 17 at 1:20 p.m. – The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department says the risk to the public is low after completing the contact investigation for the first positive COVID-19 case in Leelanau County.

The health department says they will be notifying any individuals that may be at risk of exposure to provide instructions for monitoring symptoms.

Updated at 11:30 a.m. – Two new cases of coronavirus were announced Monday night by Munson Healthcare in Traverse City.

In one case, a man from Leelanau County was exposed to the coronavirus out of state and he is now being treated at Munson Hospital after he tested positive and was admitted there. The other patient is at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.

The test was done late last week and was sent off to the state, while local health officials and the patient waited for results.

Munson Healthcare’s chief medical officer says we can expect these to be only the first cases with more to come.

“I think the predictive models and the epidemiology would tell you that yes, this will get spread in our communities. We know that will happen. We’ve been talking about this for several weeks. That’s what’s been going on across the country, so really all we can do is do the best we can to protect ourselves. That’s the things we’ve been talking about, hand washing, social distancing, or social isolation if you are ill,” said Dr. Christine Nefcy.

We’re told they’ll be updating the community immediately with any positive test results.
