Day Four of Self-Quarantine: Christine Kanerva’s Blog

Hey everyone,

This is Christine Kanerva! You normally see me on Michigan This Morning, but right now I am in self-quarantine for two weeks.

I just got back from a great vacation in Switzerland. It was my first “adult vacation” since I graduated from Michigan State University about a year ago. I decided back in October/November, since I have this paid time off thing now, why not go somewhere?

I had a foreign exchange student in high school from Switzerland and I’ve always wanted to visit her. So, back in the fall of 2019, I decided to go see her! This was before the coronavirus outbreak in China.

When I left for Switzerland about two weeks ago there wasn’t a known case there. I spoke to my host family before I left and they said that it would be safe to travel. At the time, the only European county that was dangerous to travel to was Italy and I had no plans to go near Italy. When I arrived in Switzerland, I followed the same precautionary measures as the United States; wash your hands and don’t touch your face.

I didn’t see an impact on my vacation until Thursday morning when President Trump said he was closing the boarders to Europe. I was scheduled to arrive back home on Saturday, however, for my safety I changed my flight to return on Friday.

When I arrived back in the United States, I decided to go into self-quarantine for two weeks. Not because I was feeling symptoms but for the health and safety of my coworkers and everyone around me.

I am now on day four of my self-quarantine and still feel no symptoms. Thank you for all of the love and support I am receiving throughout this crazy journey. I think self-quarantine is healthy for everyone to be doing right now, whether you traveled to Europe or not.

Today, I am on day four of my self-quarantine at my parents house in southeast Michigan. I am keeping myself busy by walking on the treadmill and crocheting!

If you have any recommendations on what I should do to keep myself busy, please email me at .
