Michigan is taking a major step to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Northern Michigan’s News Leader learned first Monday morning that all dine-in service at bars and restaurants will close at 3 p.m.

9&10 News had the first one-on-one interview with Governor Gretchen Whitmer since COVID-19 was confirmed in the state.

There are now 53 cases in Michigan.

The cases are downstate with confirmed patients in Ingham, Kent, St. Clair, Washtenaw, Oakland, Ottawa, Wayne, Monroe and Bay counties.

So far no cases are in northern Michigan, but there is a woman from Charlevoix County with the virus.

She is currently being treated downstate, and the state says she was never in the area while sick.

This weekend both Illinois and Ohio announced they were closing bars and restaurants from dining services.

It was only a matter of time before people expected it to happen in Michigan.

Monday morning, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order doing just that.

Now she has officially announce that executive order and it includes much more than bars and restaurants.

At 3 p.m. March 16, the governor is temporarily closing theaters, casinos, gymnasiums, fitness centers, spas and clubs, among many other public gathering places until further notice.

Governor Whitmer went on to say she understands the impact this will have on Michigan’s economy, but they are also pushing to try to find ways to keep businesses open while limiting public exposure.

There is no timeline for this executive order to run out. It is going to be a very fluid situation as they monitor the spread and hopefully future plateau and decline of COVID-19 in Michigan.
