CMU Cancels All Spring Study Abroad Programs Due to Coronavirus Concerns
As the coronavirus continues to spread, Central Michigan University has cancelled all study abroad trips planned for the remainder of the semester.
This is leaving many students disappointed and with some unanswered questions.
Tuesday night CMU students received an email telling them their spring study abroad trips have been cancelled.
“I haven’t unpacked it yet because I don’t want too,” said Emily Malcolm, a junior at CMU.
Many CMU students are still in denial after finding out their plans to study abroad have been cancelled.
“I was honestly really just shocked. I just had no words,” said Malcolm. “Then I kind of got sad about because I mean I’ve been planning it.”
Malcolm has been planning to study abroad in Jamaica since her freshman year.
She was supposed to leave this Friday.
“I went out and bought all these light weight t- shirts,” said Malcolm. “I went to Wal-Mart to get toothpaste, deodorant, soaps and all of that. So I had l literally everything ready to go.”
Now she’s hoping to figure out how this cancellation will affect her credits.
“I’m getting my flight ticket completely reimbursed which is super cool but other than that I don’t what else. Am I going to get any money back?” asked Malcolm.
She hopes to apply for this trip again next year.
“If I don’t get the credit I obviously want to take it again because that’s the last class I needed for my ALS minor,” said Malcolm.
While she’s disappointed, she knows the university made the right call.
“They’re keeping our best interest. They want to keep us safe,” said Malcolm.
The university says they are working to answer any questions students have.
The school is asking students returning from trips in China, South Korea, and Italy to self-quarantine off campus for 14 days.
