Peninsula Twp. Fire Dep. Receives Nearly 10K for Flashover Training

A northern Michigan fire department is getting almost $10,000 to train its crew, and also to share that training with other departments.

Peninsula Township Fire Department in Grand Traverse County will use the money from the Michigan Firefighters Training Council for what’s called “flashover” training.

A flashover happens when a concentrated layer of smoke combines with air and ignites.

“When my folks know what they need to do and how to combat it not make the situation worse, obviously makes them safer and it also could have a big impact on the victims that are in the fire,” said Chief Fred Gilstorff.

Peninsula Township’s Chief says the grant funding will cover every member of their department, but also includes enough money to offer that training to about two dozen other firefighters from departments throughout the county.
