Hook & Hunting: Don’t Dump Bait

With a state-wide free fishing weekend this weekend, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is sending out an important reminder.

It is now illegal to throw extra bait into the water.

They say it can lead to the spread of invasive species.

In the past, individual common carp have been found in Lake Cadillac and Lake Missaukee.

Their goal is to prevent this from happening again.

“When you’re done fishing, we’re just asking anglers to dispose of their bait on land or on the ice and make sure that that bait does not get into the water alive,” said Fisheries Biologist, Mark Tonello.

Free fishing weekend runs until Feb. 16—no license required.
