Michigan Department of Corrections: Chippewa Co. Inmate Attempted to Incite Riot in Email to Family Member

The Michigan Department of Corrections says an inmate at the Chippewa Correctional Facility is in solitary confinement after he tried to incite a protest.

Edward Walton sent letters complaining of conditions in the Kincheloe prison facility.

MDOC says they investigated all complaints, and found them without merit.

The state says Walton later sent an e-mail to a family member asking them to tell people to call the warden and tell them there would “be a protest at the prison to make national attention.”

They say felt Walton was encouraging those inside the prison to protest, which is considered inciting a riot.

“There is no policy, there is no rule that prohibits prisoners from complaining about anything, they are free to write letters, but because he encouraged people to call and said he was planning a protest we placed him in segregation,” said Chris Gautz, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesperson.

MDOC says they take all prisoner complaints seriously and investigate them thoroughly.
