Senator Peters Calls for Investigation Into Cherry Import Practice From Turkey, Brazil

U.S. Senator Gary Peters from Michigan is asking for U.S. Customs and Border Protection to look into how cherry imports are being handled from Brazil and Turkey.

Earlier this year, the Cherry Marketing Institute filed a complaint that tart cherry imports from Brazil were not identified and reported correctly.

The institute says it was all to avoid paying duties that would help Michigan cherry growers.

Senator Peters says, “Failing to investigate and prosecute alleged violations such as those made by the Cherry Marketing Institute threatens to undermine an industry that has weathered years of unfair competition.”

The USDA believes the final U.S. tart cherry production will be down 18% from previous years.

Michigan produces more than two-thirds of the nation’s tart cherries, valuing the industry in Michigan in the tens of millions of dollars.
