White House Releases Budget Proposal, Includes Funding for New Soo Lock

The White House released its budget proposal for fiscal year 2021 Monday.

President Donald Trump is calling for cuts to foreign aid, as well as aid to Americans who rely on safety net programs. Those include areas like affordable housing, Medicaid, and student loan assistance.

But the budget also calls for increases in national security spending, as well as funding to a major northern Michigan landmark.

The construction of a new Soo Lock gets a major boost with the president’s proposed budget.

Representative Jack Bergman says more than $123 million of the budget would go to a new Poe-sized lock in the St. Marys River.

The budget allows for ongoing construction projects to be accelerated, including the Soo Locks.
