“I’m just like any other person. I’m the person next door, I’m the person you work with. There’s really nothing outstanding other than I worked really hard all my life.”

Jesse Lewit is a Traverse City resident who like so many others, has struggled with Alcohol Use Disorder and it took him years to get the help he needed. “I think my story is more typical than people think. I think a lot of people that suffer addiction fall under that same category not everyone is asleep in the gutter alcoholic,” explains Lewit.

Substance abuse and addiction can look like Jesse but it can also look like Peer Recovery Coach, Paul Bock at Munson Healthcare in Traverse City. Today Paul is helping connect people struggling with addiction to resources in the community and proving that recovery is discovery.

Paul says, “I know what it’s like. I know what it feels like.” That’s because Paul was once there too. Now he is helping others know they’re not alone. “I get to talk to people about recovery and what’s possible, I get to do that on a daily basis. All-day long,” explains Paul.

Both men are hoping their personal journeys help eliminate the stigma attached to addiction. “We’re all human beings. We’re all on the same plateau. We’re all level and we’re all trying to muddle through life the best we can,” says Paul.
